How to get the most out of your tyres

With tyres getting ever more expensive, it’s definitely worth knowing how to get maximum use out of them. Thankfully, there are a number of simple tips to help you.

First and foremost – use the most suitable type of tyre for the conditions in which you’re driving. For example, winter tyres are a much softer compound so will wear much faster than normal tyres when temperatures are above 7 degrees Celsius. You may be better off maintaining two sets and switching them.

Inflation is also key – over or under-inflated tyres will wear much more quickly, so check and adjust your pressures regularly. Most drivers know to do this to some degree, but did you know that you should do this based on load as well? The optimum tyre pressure for a full car is different to that for a car with a lone driver, so you should consider adjusting if you’re carrying particular heavy loads, especially over longer distances. This will also improve the car’s handling and ride.

Last up, keep your tracking in line – this can quickly lead to uneven wear across the tyre, which can render a tyre useless in a fraction of the time it should.
