With the warmer weather on its way many drivers are thinking about what they need to do to ensure their car is ready for the summer. You may notice your inbox or letter box starts to get inundated with advertisements from car garages offering you a free summer check, but what is this and do you really need one?
The summer check is often based around safety and with many people going on holiday so possibly doing longer journeys it is often a good idea to take advantage of this. Unusually the summer safety check will allow the garage to check components on your vehicle such as:
Tyres to check pressures, wear and damage
Wheels to check for damage
Battery to check that it is charging and storing charge correctly
Exhaust system to check for leaks or damage that may be causing issues with emissions
Brakes to check they are functioning properly and have adequate wear on them.
Garages can offer these checks for free as they often get work out of it, for example changing tyres or replacing brake pads. It is important to bear in mind that it is beneficial to them to find work that needs carrying out on the vehicle. Although they cannot fabricate work they may try to persuade you that work needs doing immedialty when it could in fact wait a little while longer.
