The number of times someone buys a second hand car to find that the air con isn’t working as it should or isn’t working at all, is unbelievable. So many second hand cars suffer from problems with air con and it can be as simple as it needs re-gassing to something far more costly such as one or two leaks in the system or a failed fan.
It can be hard to diagnose the issue with an air con system. You can tell it is not working correctly once running as you will either feel cool but not cold air coming out or not hear the fan working. You then need to find out if it needs filling up or there is a leak. You may decide to take a punt and fill it up. You can buy the packs to re-gas the system off places like Ebay or Amazon but you must ensure that it is the right connection. These can often cost around £35-£40. If you take the vehicle to a specialist garage who can top up the air con gas you may be paying around £60-£90. This issue is ify you have a leak then the gas will simply escape meaning that the money you just spent is wasted. Some garages will do a basic air con check for free, but to properly diagnose the leak, they will need to put dye in to the system.
