Why a lot of cars no longer have a spare wheel

There was a time when all cars came with a spare wheel, however buy a new car nowadays and you’ll open the boot to find more space and no wheel!

So what’s the reason for getting rid of the spare and is it a good idea?

Most cars that don’t have a spare wheel will instead have tyre foam, this is a DIY product that you use inside the tyre to temporarily plug a puncture to allow you to drive to the nearest garage. This could be useful in the event of a minor puncture, however if you have a tyre blowout you’d have no option but to call breakdown recovery.

Not having a spare tyre does allow more room in the boot, which is a plus however many reviews state that the foam is difficult to use and they ended up call breakdown recovery anyway.

If you own a BMW, or a car made by BMW such as a Mini then you may notice you don’t have either a spare or the foam. The reason for this is that most of these cars are fitted with run-flat tyres that allow you to drive to a garage on a flat tyre, provided that the garage is fairly close that is!
