Are your tyres the right load index?

If you drive a van or a car and carry a lot of weight in it, then you need to ensure that you buy the correct tyres when replacing them. Tyres each have a number of different sizes and ratings on. You can tell the width, wheel size and aspect ratio or tyre profile. You can also see the load index and speed rating.

The tyre load rating can be used to look up on a chart to see what load the tyre can handle. This can be multiple by four to give you the total weight the vehicle can carry on said tyre. If you fit a tyre that does not have the right load rating then you may find that not only does it not handle correctly but that they wear out a lot quicker than they should. Higher rated load bearing tyres may cost more to purchase but should last longer and will ensure that the handling and braking is not compromised.

Many garages may not stock tyres that are not very common so it is always best to call in advance and check they have them or order them prior to going to the garage. Always shop around for the best tyres, but be sure to also check the fuel economy, noise rating and wet grip to check they are an all round good tyre.
