Avoiding pothole damage

Many drivers are up in arms about the amount of potholes that are appearing all across the roads in Britain. Often they are cause by the extreme weather that we sometimes gets and often when they are filled in it is only temporary and they need to be done again within a few months. As a driver, you need to try and avoid potholes to prevent damage to your tyres, wheels and suspension on your vehicle.

If you know the road is covered in potholes then take it steady. The faster you hit a pothole the more likely you are to do some damage. Give yourself enough time to stop if you cannot swerve to avoid it.

Be aware that if it has been raining then potholes can just look like puddles and you will not be able to tell how deep they are. Driving slower in wet conditions can help avoid this happening. Don’t hit the brakes when you hit a pothole, brake beforehand but try not to as you hit the pothole as this will can make the impact harder.

If you do hit a pot hole, then be sure to pull over and inspect the tyre and wheel for any damage. If after you hit a pothole you notice the car is pulling to one side it has probably knocked your tracking out. You will need to take the vehicle in to a garage to have it realigned.
