Having the correct pressure in your vehicles tyres affects performance, fuel economy and most of all safety so it is essential that they are checked regularly at least once a month as over time the air will escape, and the pressure will drop. The surface of the tyre is the part of the vehicle that makes direct contact with the road surface so correctly inflated tyres also impact on braking and grip.
To find out the right pressure that each tyre should be is simple as it is stated in the car handbook and is also usually on a sticker or plate inside the driver’s door which can be seen when the door is open. The front tyres are usually a higher pressure as there is usually more weight in the front with occupants and the engine.
To check your tyre pressure yourself you will need a tyre pressure gauge either a manual one or one that is incorporated into a pump. Locate the valve that will be on the wheel rim and unscrew the cap. Push the tyre gauge onto the valve and the readout will give you the pressure. If this is different to the handbook figures you will need to top up the air either with a pump that is operated by plugging it into the cigarette lighter or by using the air pump located on garage forecourts.
