Choose wisely when selecting your breakdown package

In some countries it is law that you should have breakdown cover. In the UK is is not mandatory but many people believe it should be as essential as insurance. You often have no idea that there is an issue with your car until you breakdown and this can mean that you end up breaking down in the most inconvenient of places. This can also be very dangerous if it happens on a motorway.

You may have been given breakdown cover as part of your car insurance package or you may even get it as part of your package that you have with your bank account, but you need to check the level of cover it gives you.

Think about how often you use your car and when and where you go. If for example you only drive short distances and could be without your car for a few days then you may decide that you don’t need break down cover or the very basic package will be enough for you. If you sometimes drive longer distances or do not have anyone that would be able to help you out if you did breakdown a little way from home then you need to be aware of the costs of emergency recovery, as this can rack in to the hundreds. It also means you may be waiting a long time to be recovered.  The cheapest breakdown packages usually only offer recovery to a local garage within 10 miles of your location when you break down, this may not be ideal as you will have to then get the car back to a local garage. Ideally roadside recovery to any UK destination is the package that is most suitable to all and often doesn’t cost a huge amount more.
