Some cars come with a full sized spare wheel where as others may come with a space saver, a can of foam or even nothing. It is important to check this when buying a different vehicle as if you have nothing, you may want to invest in buying a spare wheel if you have room for it in the boot. Tyres can be costly to replace and many people simply forget to check their tyres often enough, not even realising they need replacing until they come to their MOT.
The legal limit for the tread on tyres in the UK isĀ that they must have a depth of at least 1.6mm of tread on three quarters of the tyre and not show signs of damage. Most garages do recommend that you should ideally change tyres at 3mm when they start to affect the stopping distance of the vehicle.
If you are lucky enough to have a full size spare wheel then you may consider swapping this over on to your car. You may even be able to do this yourself, but if you do decide to put your spare on, you need to get the other one replaced as soon as possible. There is no telling when you may get a puncture and it is not unheard of for it to happen in very quick succession.
