Once a year you will have to take your car to a registered test centre to have a MOT carried out. This is a very daunting time as you usually have no idea what work will be required to pass the car. Usually a MOT costs about £40-50 pounds but this is only if it passes. Recently I took my car in for a MOT expecting to pay about £50 and maybe a £100 extra for any work required on the car to pass it and was left with a bill for over £400! You really have very little choice but to pay for the work to be done if you rely on your vehicle and do not know anyone that could do the work for less. Also if you take the car out of the test centre you have a limited time where they can re-test it for free, otherwise you will end up having to pay an additional £50 for a re-test.
